A great example of a simple way to get SEO. I definitely think that article writing/content is the best SEO technique.
To take it a step farther would be to take that content and put it in some free press release directories.

Or... write a related blog post either here, or as a guest post on another related blog. Easy! That plus article marketing, plus dropping the link anywhere relevant, will get & keep it at a top ranking.

If you search Google for "starting a free online business" (without quotes) I have a blog post at clicknewz.com that I wrote over a year ago... still ranking #1. (note: sometimes varies by location)

By the way, can I just say... I love your blog theme/design here Susanne. It's simple, the text is the perfect size, I love it!

You're funny Tracy - I'll definitely keep you in mind as a Lab Rat ;)

It's amazing though how quickly and easily you can achieve rankings if you pick the right keyword. Now if we were smart, we'd point another strong link or two to that post. An easy way to do that would be to write an article and submit it it to ezinearticles.com - hmm...

Looks like I've got work to do :)

As of a few minutes ago, the keyword phrase is still showing up #1 for Moms in A Blog ;-)

It's also my 4th highest searched keyword on the site, right now and has consistently ranked in the top 10 since she posted.

Great lesson, Susanne! Any time you'd like to use my site to test your stuff - you go right ahead! ;-)

Excellent information Lynn. I'm expecting the ranking to fall off, but you never know. Working on a few links to it. With just a little bookmarking and the one little link from this blog posts, we moved to #1 in google and even got a double listing, which is encouraging.

Tracy mentioned that she's seeing some traffic from that keyphrase already. I'll ask her to stop by and fill us in on exactly how much traffic she's getting from it.

Guest posting is a great way to get what I call "indirect rankings" - great for people with a new site that hasn't been indexed yet - but great for those of us with established sites that want quality inbound links too!

Some sites/blogs are spidered more frequently. And the more frequently they are spidered, the faster your new post gets found & indexed. The rate of frequency is directly related to how frequently you update the content on that domain. If you rarely ever update, googlebot rarely needs to come by and check for an update. Obvious point, eh?

As for how long it will "stick" - blog posts tend to rank 'n tank. This is because Google considers them "current news" or "newsy" compared to static HTML pages. As soon as new posts appear on that topic, OR if you get zero other inbound links to the post, it will tank to the gazillionth page of the results.

The solution is to get high quality backlinks to the post. You won't do this with every post, but with your "pillar articles" as Darren Rowse calls them. Your best content.

I have blog posts I wrote a year ago that still rank #1 for very nice search phrases - all because I got some strong inbound links pointing to it.

Awesome post! Loving this blog :D
