Deep Link Ratio – Some Quick Thoughts On Using Deep Linking To Improve Rankings

chain-linksI thought I’d share some thoughts on deep linking and deep link ratio with you this morning.

Let me start by explaining exactly what deep linking is. You already know that it’s important to get plenty of links to your site.  Often we just end up getting links to our homepage, but from an SEO perspective that isn’t ideal.

It also doesn’t work to well for me as an affiliate marketer. Sure, it’s nice to have my homepage rank well, but I what I’m really after is getting my interior pages to rank, in particular those with affiliate offers on them.

How do we go about accomplishing this? With deep links. They are links that point to pages within our site. On a static website those are often our article or product review pages (or product pages on an ecommerce website).

On a blog, they are links that point to individual blog posts and sometimes category pages.

When I first start to promote a website, I try to build links in a 50/50 ratio. For each link that I’m getting to the home page, I’m also getting a link for an interior page.

As the site matures and becomes more popular, people will naturally start to link to the home page and most of my link building efforts focus on deep linking.

I’m sure your next question is how I go about getting these deep links. Most of it is done through article marketing and guest blogging. I also spend some time each week commenting on other peoples blogs and use a deep link to a particular post on my site as the link, usually a post that related to the topic I’m commenting on.

Most comment links are nofollowed, but there are some blogs out there that will share the “link juice”.

To a lesser degree I use social bookmarking and social news sites (think digg or reddit) to build links. These sites can give you a quick initial boost and get your pages indexed faster, but the links don’t always “stick”.

My main way to get incoming links is to share valuable content either via an article or a blog post and get a link (or two) back to my site in exchange.

This may seem like a slow link building process and it is, but the links I am getting are usually high quality and tend to stay around for years to come.
