Leave A Comment Gain A Keyword Rich Link
After reading Lynn Terry’s post on some Cool WordPress Plugins For Comments, I decided to install a “dofollow” plugin on this blog as well as the KeywordLuv plugin.
This means that you can now get a very nice link from this site with keyword rich anchor text (I explained anchor text links here).
Why am I doing this (after all, I just got through telling you not to bleed page rank)? Simple – I want to encourage you to leave more comments and get some good discussions going in the comments sections of the blog posts. And I don’t mind sharing some link love and page rank in return :)
How Does It Work?
It is very simple to set up keyword rich anchor text with this new plugin. So far when you’ve been posting, you’ve probably entered your name (i.e. Lynn Terry) followed by a link to your website (i.e. http://www.clicknewz.com) in the name and website fields in the comment section. Often people will create a variation of their name that will also include one of their main keywords (i.e. Lynn@Clicknewz.com or Lynn@Internet Marketing Blog) to get their keyword in the anchor text of the comment link.
With this new plugin, you can leave a comment and get a link back with just the anchor text you want. To do so simple enter name@keyword in the name field. Here’s an example:
Susanne@Affiliate Marketing Blog – this would end up looking in the comments section like this
Susanne Affiliate Marketing Blog
instead of
Remember the format is your name , the @ symbol, and then your main keyword or keypharse.
By the way you can of course change both your name (with the keyword) and the link around with each comment you leave. In fact, I would recommend it. You want to build plenty of deep links to various posts and articles on your website and of course each of those will target their own keyword.
How To Use This To Your Best Advantage
Before we go into the rules of commenting (no worries, they are simple), I’d like to mention how you can best use this to your advantage (and make me happy at the same time).
If you haven’t already done so, sign up for my blog notifications. There’s a signup box in the upper right hand corner of the blog. Every time I make a new blog post, you will receive an email with the title and a brief introduction to the post.
When you see a post that interests you, click through to the blog, read it and then feel free to leave a comment and add to the discussion. Ask a question, make a suggestion or share what’s working for you. Just keep it related to the topic of the post.
Then pick a page on your own website, grab the link and add it to the website box in the comment section. Then enter your name, followed by the @ symbol and then followed by the main keyword for the page you are linking to and hit submit.
Rinse and repeat and before you know it you will have quite a few new links pointing to various page of your website, all of which will help improve your rankings for your keywords.
Sadly this is probably going to attract some people who will try to take the lazy way out and game the system by adding various forms of comment spam to this blog. I have some pretty good software in place to weed those out and am also going to enforce the rules below. Don’t let them scare you though. If you don’t try to game the system, your comments are always welcome.
The Rules
It’s pretty simple … Leave a good, valuable comment and I’ll be glad to send you some link love.
Don’t
- Spam
- Link to a questionable website
- Copy someone else’s comment to circumvent having to write your own.
- Don’t just write a rather useless little sentence like “This is really cool”, “Love the post” etc.
Just put some thought into your comments. Read the post before you comment and contribute to the conversation.
If you don’t, I’ll mark your comment as spam which will result in every other comment you make on this blog to land in the spam folder where I’ll likely never see it again.

P.S. Another great way to gain keyword rich links from other blogs is to become a guest blogger. You can write these one at a time or really crank it up with a blog tour. I am reviewing and testing Nicole Dean’s Blog Tour Guide and will have a full review for you in a day or two. So far I can tell you I’m really liking it and am already seeing some fantastic results.

Just testing the new KeywordLuv plugin.
By the way – I had a little issue with the comment field that I just discovered tonight. The new optin box you can see in the sidebar on the right was causing the comment field mail (which of course is a required field) to not display and work. Since I’m usually logged in, I didn’t notice until just now. Very sorry if you were trying to leave a comment.
Susanne,
I subscribed to your blog posts by email as well as RSS to make sure I don’t miss anything. I’ve been learning a lot by reading your articles.
I especially appreciated your explanation about how we dilute our page rank by having too many outgoing links. Your style of writing makes otherwise complicated things easy to understand.
I appreciate the effort it takes to pull that off—that’s what I do in the small business tax arena.
I’ll be looking forward to what you have to say about Nicole’s blog tour.
Sheryl
I use Keyword Luv also, but I also use Comment Luv for those who have a blog. It brings up their latest post title after the comment.
It’s worth pointing out that a do-follow plugin is required for keyword luv (and I think comment luv also) to work properly (I wouldn’t have known if someone hadn’t pointed it out to me).
– Jeffery
Great point Jeffrey on the dofollow plugin. It’s pointed out in the download and installation instructions for KeywordLuv, but I guess it’s easy to overlook. KeywordLuv works with most dofollow plugins (according to the pluging download page).
Do you run Keywordluv and Commentluv at the same time?
I really like this comment plugin, Susanne – it looks nice in your example comment above, and much better than just using a keyword phrase as the name.
The only issue I see is educating your visitors on the option. I may install it, and will add a bit of text between Leave Comment and the Name Field that explains how to use the option.
Lynn, by default, the plugin has a message that explains how to use it right by the comment area. I turned it off yesterday when I was testing the plugin and noticed that I somehow goofed up the comment area. It took me a little while to figure out it was the new optin box I added and thought it may be the plugin instead.
Thanks for pointing that out, I’ll put a message back in there.
I have just installed this on our wordpress MU installation and it does not seem to work with the MU system. Hopefully someone will update the plugin to is works. Excellent blog though, thank you.
Kris, so sorry to hear that it isn’t working on wordpress MU. I believe on the plugin download page it had some information on how to get it to work even if your theme didn’t work with it out of the box.
Hey Susane,
I run keywordluv and commentluv both at the same time in my real estate blog. I have seen certain blogs where they have a plethora of plugins, like the nofollow free, top commentators… and so on. I wish you all the best and bet your traffic is gonna go north. :)
Thanks!
Mack
Mack, glad to hear you can get comment luv and keyword luv to work at the same time. I’ll think about adding comment luv as well. Going to check out your blog to see how it works together.
I didn’t think to mention it, but another good plugin I use is “Subscribe To Comments” It allows people to be notified of responses to their comments (well, any additional comments really) by email if they so choose.
So if you are answering or asking a question, there’s a better chance they will see it sooner rather than later.

Suzanne,
I wish you the best with allowing Keywords on your blog posts. I have Keyword and Comment Luv enabled plus I use my own plugin. It requires a 150 character comment for the link to go into moderation. I have my comment policy clearly posted. Still 90 % of the comments are spam!
Hi Suzanne…Love your blog here, and I dig the Dofollow. I just installed Keyword Luv, Comment Luv, and Do Follow on my website as well, and I enjoy reviewing these comments…Heck, I just sit in fromt of my computer screen all day anyway, so even virtual friends are appreciated!
Thanks,
Jay
P.S. – You might consider adding Top Commentor to this page as well.
I highly recommend Keyword Luv for any blog. My San Diego real estate site saw a big increase in traffic after I installed it. And contrary to some misconceptions, I’ve found that people for the large part do not abuse the privilege of being able to post comments with links. Instead it has been a great way to encourage insightful exchange of dialogue about the topics that I write about.
Thanks for the info Susanne. This plugin is really neat, the only thing is that you have to clarified how to use it at his best, like you did. I will check on every blog I comment if the name@keyword sintaxis is allowed.
This is also a great way to get others to subscribe to your RSS feeds as well. The information shared here is worth keeping up to date with anyway. I am quite pleased that I stumbled on your blog.
Thanks to the keywordluv plugin, my site is now
moving up on Google. I can now be found on the
4th page of google using a combination of any 2
of my search words.
