Lessons Learned from My Favorite Super Bowl Ad
Did you watch the Super Bowl on Sunday… to be honest, I mostly just watched the ads and was busy writing a short report on finding a hot niche during the actual game time (more on that report in a day or two). There was one ad that really stood out for me, and that was Google’s Love Story Ad. In case you missed it, I’m posting it here, followed by the lessons I’ve learned from it.
Lessons Learned:
1) Tell A Story
We are a story telling culture. It’s how knowledge was passed on before we had scrolls, books or the Internet and we are still a sucker for a good story. It moves us and makes us pay attention. If you’re not already working stories into your marketing, give it a try. It’s a great way to get your message across without seeming too pushy.
2) Be Short And To The Point
My favorite part about this ad and what caught my attention in the first place was how short and to the point it was. It’s a story told with nothing but Google searches for crying out loud. That’s even shorter than Twitters 140 character limit.
The shortness forces the story teller to get to the point right away and cuts out any distractions. Here’s a good exercise. Come up with a story to work into your marketing and write it down. Then try to get it to at least half the word count of the original story while still getting the same message across.
3) It’s Ok To Be Emotional
I still struggle with this a bit. In my mind, business was business and not emotional or tied to my personal experiences. It was a hard lesson for me to learn that we buy from people we like and trust. Which means I have to open myself up as a person (emotions and all) to my market and give them a chance to get to know me.
Don’t be afraid to tell your list or blog about the bad day you had or in this case a slightly cheesy Super Bowl Ad about a Paris Love Story and the lessons I’ve learned from it.

P.S. Tell me about your favorite ad and what you’ve learned from it that you can incorporate in your own marketing.

I do love the Google ad, too. And very good lessons you’ve observed, Susanne. It is difficult to tell a story, be personal, keep it short, and get your point across. But, Google really nailed it! And, the funny thing is, we could follow the storyline in those little searches. How funny is that? We actually can now speak Google-Talk.
I loved that Madison Avenue has returned to sentimental and nostalgic advertising again. When times are tough, we turn back to what we are familiar with – the old fuzzy slippers and robe routine.
Thanks for this great topic. I really have enjoyed following it.
