Best Niche Markets – 3 Ways To Come Up With Ideas
This week we will talk a lot about niche marketing. Let’s start at the beginning.
A niche is simply a tightly focused subset of a market which makes it perfect for affiliate marketing. Instead of going after a huge market like fitness and working out, my friend Scott is focusing on a niche market of fat-loss workouts for work at home entrepreneurs and designed a series of 10 minute workouts that can be completed in a rather small office space. (You can see his product at EasyWorkoutPlan.com).
If you are new to niche marketing, you may be wondering why you would want to tighten your focus and thus reducing the amount of people who would potentially be interested in the products and services you will be promoting as an affiliate (or your own products for that matter). The reason is simple. It’s hard to compete with large all encompassing sites who sell everything under the sun – usually for less than what you can offer. While most of us are a one-man or one-woman show, they have entire teams to focus on SEO along.
By focusing on a tighter sub-market, you can custom tailor your offers to a particular target market (like the work at home office workout crowd) who much rather buy from someone who understands their specific needs and desires.
Now that we’ve established why we want to enter into a niche market, let’s take a look at how do we go about finding a niche that’s a good fit?
Start with some brainstorming. Here are three different ways I brainstorm new niche ideas.
1)Â Start with What You Know
A good place to start is with what you already know. To show your expertise, you are going to create a decent amount of content for you new niche website, so you might as well pick something you are already familiar with.
Think back on your various work experiences. What can you bring to the table from there? If you were a middle school teacher, you know a lot about how kids learn, how to deal with various issues when it comes to raising kids as well as the various topics you were teaching. If you worked as an office manager, you are bringing some great people and organizational skills to the table. You’ve learned something of value in every single job you ever held. Tap into that knowledge and brainstorm some niche ideas from there.
Don’t forget to look at hobbies and interests you’ve held over the years. If you’ve been playing golf for 10 years, you now a heck of a lot more than a beginner and can share some valuable lessons.
The goal here is to come up with a list of things that you know slightly more about than the average person. That’s all it takes to make you an expert who is qualified to write about this topic. More importantly, people will be glad to consume the help and tips you are offering, will start to trust you and then be comfortable taking you up on the various affiliate offers you present them with.
2) Do Some Reading
I mentioned before that it doesn’t take much to make you an expert qualified to run a website on any given topic. I’ve heard somewhere that if you’ve read three books on any topic, you know more about it than 90% of the population. Take advantage of this and keep an eye out for niche topics anytime you are reading something.
Look at newspapers, magazines, forums, blogs and find a popular topic and think about tighter niches within that topic. For example, this time of the year there’s a lot of talk about losing a few pounds. Instead of entering into this huge, competitive market directly, niche down into weightloss for new moms, weightloss tips for kids or some other sub market of the diet industry.
You can do this with just about any popular market, or you may come across something that’s already “niched” down pretty well in your reading, like “selling children books on ebay” for example.
3) Look at What’s Already Selling
Last but not least, take a look at what’s already selling. With affiliate marketing, that’s pretty simple to do. Take a look at the larger affiliate networks like commission junction, linkshare, shareasale or clickbank and browse through their best selling products in any given category.
If it’s already selling well for others, chances are pretty good that it will also work for you.
Once you’ve gone through this exercise, you should have a pretty extensive list of niche ideas. Pick one that has some good profit potential and get to work. I’ll show you tomorrow how easy, fast and inexpensive it is to set up a niche website. This makes it easy to give a few different niches a try to see which one is fun to work in (and of course profitable as well).
