How To Post Blog Content On A Regular Basis

CalendarI am sure you’ve noticed that this blog has tended to go through some periods of high activity (I’m blogging a lot – often daily) and then periods of almost complete silence – which isn’t a good thing.

That’s what got me to thinking about how to post blog content on a regular basis and I have come up with a few different strategies. I’ll share them below, give all of them a try and we’ll see what works and what doesn’t.

1) Keep A Running List Of Topics To Write About

Sometimes it’s easy to give up simply because you don’t know what to write about. To make sure that doesn’t happen, keep an ongoing list of ideas and blog titles handy. This can be  a scrap piece of paper lying on your desk, a word document on your hard drive or my personal favorite – drafts in your blog.

I’ve started doing this just a few weeks ago. Anytime I have an idea for a good blog post, I log into the admin area and create a new post for it and leave it in draft. Sometimes it is nothing more than the title, while other times I’ll jot down a quick little outline. This particular post has been sitting in my drafts for about a week with the title, a rough outline and the image in it. It made it super easy and fast for me to write this blog post for you this morning.

2) Schedule Some Time To Blog

Another good strategy (so I hear) is to set aside a block of time each day to blog. This could be 30 minutes at the beginning or end of your day or everyday at 3pm. I haven’t tried this yet, but am using something like it for a newsletter I publish each week and it’s working pretty well for that.

Make sure you pick the right time when you schedule these tasks. Most of us have certain times of the day where we are more creative and writing comes more natural. It also helps not to be constantly interrupted. Keep this in mind when you work on your schedule and don’t be afraid to move stuff around until you find the perfect time slot for writing your blog posts.

3) Work Ahead – Even If It Is Just One Post Per Week

When the creative mood strikes you, go ahead and write a few articles or blog posts and schedule them to go out once a week, every Wednesday for example. Then before you work on any other blog posts, make sure you have a few week’s of Wednesday posts scheduled in your blog. This way you know that come rain or shine, you will have at least one new blog post up each week. If you happen to feel like writing something else that day, just schedule it to go out the following day or a few days later.

Which brings me to another good point about blogging on a regular basis…

4) Don’t Overdo It

Sure, it would be nice to have a new post out there every single day, but if you are busy like me, that isn’t always the best goal. Believe me, I’ve tried hard, but after a few weeks of blogging on a daily basis, I get burned out and end up not writing anything for weeks. Instead set your goals low to begin with … for example aim to get 2 new blog posts a week out there. Once that’s become a habit and you have some posts in draft mood for the next few weeks, go ahead and see if you can keep up with posting 3 posts per week etc.

P.S. Writing fresh content is only half of the story. You also need that content to be found. The best way to accomplish this, create a steady stream of traffic to your site and rise in the search engines for your keywords, is to build incoming links.
