Balancing Content Creation And Link Building
Yesterday we talked about how to post blog content on a regular basis, today I want to talk to you about how to create a balance between creating fresh content (as in writing new blog posts etc.) and building links to that new content.
In a perfect world I would use the 20/80 rule. I would spend 20 percent of my time creating new content for my blogs and websites and then 80% of my time and effort in promoting the new content.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen, so my personal balance is somewhere between 50/50 and the ideal 20/80 percentage. That means that for every new piece of content I create on any of my websites, I spend at least that much time and effort to build links to that new page and get the word out in general.
Why do I spend so much time and effort linking from other websites to these particular pages on my own site? Because it brings me quite a bit of traffic for two reasons:
- Getting links out there will send people directly from other websites to mine. For example, I may write a blog post and then a related article and submit that article to EzineArticles.com. People find the article, read it and then click through to my blog via the link in the author resource box a the end of the article.
- That same link will also help my blog post rank higher in the search engines and if I’ve done my homework (a.k.a. keyword research and on site seo optimization) it may just get me on the first page of google, resulting in a nice steady stream of traffic to my blog post from here on out.
What do I do to build links to the new content? Here’s a quick list of some of my favorite link building activities:
- Write Articles
- Guest Blogging
- Commenting on Blogs
- Social Bookmarketing
- Link to it from other related websites and blogs I own.

P.S. I’m off to build a few links that will point to this new post. How about you? Have you written a new blog post today or created a new page for your site? Take a few minutes right now and do something to get a link or two to it.

I could not agree with you more on the 20/80 breakdown – with the emphasis on promotion vs. creation of new content.
Because I write for a living, I am oh-so-guilty of reversing those numbers simply because creating content comes more naturally to me.
Unfortunately, great content without any traffic doesn’t do anyone any good!
Yes, I hear you on that one Trish. Thankfully you can create more content and use it to promote your existing content. I do that quite a bit through article marketing and guest blogging. If you combine those two with some basic seo, you can pretty quickly get the content on your own site to rank in the search engines and create a nice steady stream of traffic to your site.
