Do I Need To Spend Money To Make Money With Affiliate Marketing?

It’s time for another great affiliate marketing question and this is one that I hear quite frequently both in email and whenever I talk to someone in person that’s interested in getting started with affiliate marketing. The question is:

Do I need to spend some money to get started with affiliate marketing?

The short answer is no, you don’t need to spend any money at all. In fact if you come across a so called “affiliate network” that requires you to pay to be able to promote their products it’s most likely a scam and the only one making any money is said affiliate network.

Any reputable one, be it a whole network or a single individual with an affiliate program for their products, will allow you and encourage you to promote their offers for free. You do the marketing and when they result in a sale, you get a cut of the profits.

You don’t pay anything to become an affiliate and you can certainly market your affiliate link via social media sites and free websites at no cost at all. It’s hard create even a part time income that way though. Instead, what I suggest you do is spend a little bit of money and get set up with a website and an autoresponder service like Aweber.

The goal is to build a content rich website or blog that attracts free search engine traffic and then invite readers to join your list. You can see this method in action right here. I’m sharing good information and if you like it enough, you’ll probably sign up for free email updates (using the box in the upper right-hand corner of my blog). That form is powered by Aweber and allows me to do a couple of things…

Let’s recap. If you are just starting out, spend some money on:

Then work on building your site and growing your list. There is plenty of free information available on this blog and across the web. Another great free resource is a 7 day e-course I put together on how to start an affiliate website. Start making a little bit of money and then reinvest wisely.

And here are a couple of other things I spend money on regularly.

Tools

There are a few tools out there that make my life easier. They include paid wordpress themes like Studiopress that allow me to quickly set up well optimized, great looking websites. I also use Wordtracker to help me find good keywords for my content and then help me track how well my pages are ranking. Both of these are great examples of paid tools that will make your life easier and help you profit from your affiliate sites quicker.

Training

Each month I pick a training course to learn more and grow my business. Both topics and prices of training I go through vary greatly. A good one for you to start out with is Daily Affiliate Tasks. For $10 a month, I share weekly lessons with you on things I’m doing right now to grow my affiliate business.

Help

Last but not least, I spend some money each month to have people help me with various tasks. If you don’t know how to set up your own website or customize it to look the way you want it to look, that might be a great early investment for you. I pay people to set up and tweak sites for me , handle customer support, create graphics and more.

The key is to start small with just the absolute essentials and start making some money. Then reinvest as much as you can into things that will help you grow your income. Those may be tools, the may be training, training, or help that you need from an expert in their field. Pace yourself and only spend money on one or two things at a time and then implement them to the point where they are making you money.
